Dr. Han first introduced the construction industry in a global context. According to the data from the IEA, it highlights the significant contribution of buildings to global energy consumption and emissions, showcasing the industry’s lagging progress toward net-zero targets. The discussion emphasized the critical challenges in China’s construction industry, which is characterized by high resource consumption and pollution, with carbon emissions from building operations and materials production dominating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to statistics from the 2022 China Urban and Rural Construction Carbon Emission Series Research Report, the construction industry accounts for 45.5% of the national total energy consumption and 50.9% of the national total carbon emissions. For example, compared to airports in Europe, Chinese airports are very advanced and high-tech, but their ESG rating are far lower than those in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To better facilitate the low-carbon transition of China’s construction industry, there is an urgent need for carbon management training in the field of engineering consulting. Therefore, Dr. Shi proposes a pathway to sustainable transformation by addressing the value chain, emphasizing the influence of investors and design institutions as key decision-makers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A detailed and comprehensive training framework was also introduced, offering consulting firms tools for carbon management, strategic planning, and resilience-building. The module includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Carbon neutrality strategic planning<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Carbon reduction project design and evaluation<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Scientific carbon targets and ESG implementation<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Product eco-design and carbon footprint analysis<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Climate adaptation and resilience strategies<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the along the meeting, it was discussed the strategic framework for low-carbon transition, emphasizing the mitigation of climate change through low-carbon transformations and enhancing resilience to the impacts of climate change. The overall message underscored the urgent need for systemic change, leveraging expertise and innovation to drive low-carbon transitions in construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the discussion session, Professors Herzog and Mari added that there is currently a lack of understanding of how buildings interact with each other, which means a lack of a comprehensive building description. CRH aims to lead this market with its innovative Integrated Carbon Capture and Hydrogen Production (ICCHP) system, combining DAC with water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This system is the world’s first technology to couple Direct Air Capture (DAC) with hydrogen electrolysis to synthesize green fuels. It stands out for its exceptional performance, with a CO2 capture efficiency of over 80%, a regeneration efficiency close to 100%, fully powered by green electricity without the need for thermal energy, and low energy consumption for CO2 capture (3-5 GJ\/tonCO2). At an electricity cost of 0.4 yuan\/kWh, the cost of carbon capture can be reduced to zero. The technology supports continuous operation for 7,000-8,000 hours annually, enabling the production of green methanol, a high-value fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n CRH’s development roadmap clearly outlines the action plan for the coming years. Conceptual design, laboratory testing, and pilot system development were already done. In 2025 CRH plans the construction of a 1,000-ton demonstration plant, followed by the launch of a 10,000-ton commercial system and commencement of large-scale operations in the years ahead, expanding to over 10 DAC facilities which generate revenues through diverse applications of green methanol within five year time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n CRH’s integrated DAC and hydrogen production method offers a revolutionary path to carbon neutrality, leveraging renewable energy and green fuel technologies to drive the global low-carbon transition. CNEUCN will assist CRH in its path and facilitate the cooperation with further like-minded industrial partners to open this new chapter of the green revolution, advancing the project on a large scale
