As buildings become more energy-efficient in use, embodied carbon is increasingly becoming the dominant source of emissions over a building\u2019s lifecycle.<br>A new technological frontier is now emerging: carbon-negative construction materials. Unlike traditional \u201clow-carbon\u201d solutions, their climate value is based on net carbon removal, not only emission avoidance.<br>Recent innovation pathways include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carbon mineralisation, where captured CO\u2082 is converted into stable mineral compounds embedded in building materials.<\/li>\n<li>Bio-based and enzyme-enabled processes, which accelerate CO\u2082 conversion into solid structural components.<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid systems, combining engineered timber, mineral binders, and advanced curing techniques.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A notable recent breakthrough involves enzymatic structural materials, in which biological catalysts rapidly convert CO\u2082 into mineralised solids during material formation.
